Shell publishes industry associations climate review update

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) published its first Industry Associations Climate Review, which assessed Shell’s alignment with its 19 core industry associations on climate-related policy. In this review, Shell summarised the core tenets of its own stance on climate policy and set forth principles to strengthen the management of its memberships. The review led to Shell cancelling its membership of the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, where it found “material misalignment” on climate positions. The review was an early example of the push towards greater transparency on climate-related lobbying.

In April 2020, Shell published an update to its review, detailing the actions it has taken in 2019 to address the nine other industry associations where it had found ‘some misalignment’. It also details the value of payments made to the 18 remaining industry associations in 2019.
